Driver jailed 20 years for stealing taxi

Tema Circuit court has sentenced a taxi driver 20 years in prison for snatching Toyota Corolla taxi cab in Tema.

The suspect, Alex Ampong who resides at Lapaz snatched  taxi cab with registration number GT-4488-15 valued at GH¢29,000 at gun point.

Presenting the fact of the case, prosecutor, DSP Adolphine Dzansi told Tema Circuit Court ‘A’ presided over by Mariama Sammo that the complainant Isaac Asiedu was driving the taxi at Tema Community 1 on 18th October 2015 at about 11:30am.

The accused then stopped him for a drop-in to Tema harbour close to GHACEM but the accused pointed a gun at him and ordered him out of the car on their way.
Complainant then reported the incident to the Tema police who immediately launched an investigation into the matter.

On 23rd October at about 8:00pm, accused sent a Nissan Almera taxi cab to a sprayer, Wisdom Kwaku at Ashaiman to change the colour.  

The sprayer detected that the registration number on the car was different from the number on the insurance sticker on the car and quickly alerted Ashaiman police.

The police then laid ambush at the workshop and apprehended Ampong and charged him for robbery.
The judge after hearing the case then sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour.
