The West African Gas Pipeline Company, WAPCo, has vowed to cut supply to the Volta River Authority (VRA) by Friday if the latter fails to pay debts owed it.
Managing Director of WAPCo, Walter Perez says WAPCo has regularly engaged Ghana’s Public Utility Regulatory Commission, VRA, the relevant ministries and the highest levels of government to find a solution to the situation before it reaches crisis level.
“Unfortunately, these efforts have not achieved the desired results”, he said.
The VRA owes Nigeria Gas Association N-Gas over 180 million dollars. The country provides Ghana with natural gas as part of the West African Gas Pipeline agreement to power its thermal plants.
Earlier this week, former VRA boss Dr Charles Wereko Brobby warned the country's power crisis would stay longer if the debt to N-Gas was not paid.
According to the managing director of WAPCo, the company received a formal notification from VRA’s gas shipper a month ago that deliveries to VRA should be curtailed, effective from October 16th, 2015.
